Sean Dyche’s team were the lowest scorers in the country last season with just 34 League goals as they escaped relegation from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth.

The boss has now accepted that he can no longer rely on the injury-prone Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay, who netted once last term.

And with another target man as his top transfer priority, Abraham has emerged as the number one target for the Merseyside strugglers.

Abraham cost Roma £34million when he joined them from Chelsea two years ago and still has another three years to run on his contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

But the Serie A giants are in danger of breaching Italy’s strict FFP regulations and are ready to listen to offers for the 25-year-old.

He scored an impressive 27 goals in his debut season in Rome but has found life more of a struggle this time around, scoring just nine times so far with one game still to play.

Chelsea have the option to trigger a buy-back clause for the England international this summer for an agreed fee of £68million.

But that would be twice what they sold him for and they have no plans to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.

And that has opened the door for Everton to get in with a quick bid to head off interest from Aston Villa.

Like Roma, Everton are also walking a financial tightrope after recently being charged with breaking FFP rules by the Premier League.

But they still have the £45million banked from Anthony Gordon’s January move to Newcastle burning a hole in their pockets.

And with their Premier League status guaranteed, there will be funds made available to Dyche to strengthen his squad and ensure they will not be fighting to beat the drop again next season.
