Ajax midfielder Steven Berghuis appeared to lash out a fan for an alleged racist remark after his side's defeat to FC Twente.
Despite going 1-0 up through Dusan Tadic, John Heitinga's side lost 3-1 away at Twente, who scored through Manfred Ugalde, Julio Pleguezuelo and Vaclav Cerny in a remarkable second half turnaround.
It was a miserable end to the season for the Amsterdam outfit, who finished third in the Eredivisie behind both PSV and Feyenoord to achieve Europa League qualification next season.
But the defeat has become old news after Berghuis was filmed striking a fan in a video which went viral on social media.
Dutch outlet De Telegraaf say the incident happened after the game and it was a Twente fan who Berghuis hit.
Berghuis can be seen leaning over a barrier and angrily swinging for an individual not shown as shocked fans watched on.
The Netherlands international then pointed at the fan before saying something which was not detected. He then boarded the team bus after being instructed to do so by a security guard.
It has been suggested by Dutch media, citing a witness at the scene, that Berghuis was retaliating to a racist comment made towards teammate Brian Bobbey.
It's alleged the term "cancer blackie" was used, which led to Berghuis losing his cool.
Ajax have yet to make a public comment on the matter and want to establish the full facts before they do, it's claimed.
Berghuis, who started out at Twente and played 16 times for the club, has also not responded at the time of writing.
The former Watford man came on as a substitute in the loss and was shown a yellow card.
He joined Ajax from Feyenoord in 2021 and the backlash from the fans who once adored him was strong. He received 19 pages of serious threats, including taunts wishing death upon him and his family.
Berghuis sent a letter to police as a result.
