Newcastle United's summer transfer plans have changed thanks to Eddie Howe's high-flying Magpies.

Howe's side are currently in contention for a Champions League spot next season - and it's convinced higher-ups to inject more cash. According to the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle had no plans to splash the cash in the summer.

The Magpies had opted to spend shrewdly over the summer, to help the comply with FFP. However, higher-ups are now considering splashing the cash with the extra money from new sponsors and TV rights that will come with a spot in the Champions League.

Howe's side have spent big in the last three windows under their new Saudi Arabian ownership. The Magpies have parted ways with around £250million, while only selling one player - Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest, for £12 million.

The report continues to state that Newcastle will look to target around four "elite" players - and there won't be a budget, with each transfer being evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Newcastle are also believed to want to add more experienced Prem players to their squad.

Names such as James Maddison, Conor Gallagher, and Ivan Toney have all been linked with moves in recent weeks.

Newcastle are currently fourth in the Premier League - three points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, and the Magpies have a game in hand over the Lilywhites.

The Magpies last played the Champions League during the 2002/03 campaign - and they were dumped out in the qualifying rounds the following season. However, they played in Europe a decade ago, when they graced the Europa League.
