German giants Bayern confirmed the news with a blunt statement on social media.

A Twitter post announced: "FC Bayern and head coach Julian Nagelsmann have parted company.

"This decision was taken by CEO Oliver Kahn and board member for sport Hasan Salihamidzic in consultation with club president Herbert Hainer. Nagelsmann will be succeeded by Thomas Tuchel."

Assistant coaches Dino Toppmoller, Benjamin Gluck and Xaver Zembrod have also left the club.

Former Blues boss Tuchel has signed a deal up until the summer of 2025.

He will supervise training for the first time on Monday.

Speaking on the decision to sack Nagelsmann, CEO Oliver Kahn said: "When we signed Julian Nagelsmann for FC Bayern in the summer of 2021, we were convinced we would work with him on a long-term basis - and that was the goal of all of us right up to the end.

"Julian shares our aspiration to play successful and attractive football. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad - despite the Bundesliga title last year - has come to the fore less and less often.

"After the World Cup we have played less successfully and less attractively. The big fluctuations in performance have cast doubt on our goals for this season, but also our goals for the future.

"That is why we have acted now. Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching team, and wish everyone the best of luck for the future."

Bayern paid the highest ever compensation fee for a manager to poach Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig in 2021.

He led Bayern to Bundesliga glory last season.

The club are currently second in the table, a point behind Borussia Dortmund, and have a Champions League quarter-final tie with Manchester City next month.

Tuchel meanwhile has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in September.

He guided the Blues to Champions League glory in 2021, and also enjoyed domestic success with Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

And Tuchel is set for a baptism of fire as he takes on his old club and current league leaders in his first game in charge of Bayern.

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said on the decision to axe Nagelsmann: "This has been the most difficult decision in my time as board member for sport at Bayern Munich.

"I have had an open, trusting, friendly relationship with Julian from day one. I regret the parting of the ways with Julian.

"But after a thorough analysis of the sporting development of our team, especially since January and with the experience of the second half of the previous season, we have now decided to release him.

"I am very grateful to Julian for what he has done for FC Bayern and I wish him all the best."

Surprising reports that Nagelsmann was on his way out at Bayern first emerged on Thursday night.

The highly rated manager won 60 out of his 84 games in charge of the club.

But he may not be out of work for long, with The Telegraph reporting that Tottenham are set to open talks with Nagelsmann after today's decision.

Antonio Conte's days at Spurs appear numbered after his stunning rant following the 3-3 draw at Southampton.
