Wade Elliott plans ‘pretty boring’ night to celebrate rare Cheltenham win

Wade Elliott said he would celebrate Cheltenham’s 1-0 win over Fleetwood with a cup of tea, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and some nice chocolates.

The head coach has been under mounting pressure after a poor run that saw his side drop to within two points of the League One relegation zone.

But Alfie May’s stunning second-half volley was enough to earn just a second league victory of 2023 and lighten the mood at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

“I am pretty boring, so it’ll be Ant and Dec, a cup of tea and I might stop off somewhere and get myself some nice chocolates as a treat,” Elliott said.

“The overriding emotion at the final whistle was relief because it was a pressure game, there is no getting away from that.

“It was a well-deserved win and the players showed real courage because it was tense and nervy, but they still wanted to take the ball and pass the ball.

“I just said to them, it’s one down, enjoy the moment as it’s important, get around each other and enjoy it because they’ve worked so hard for it.”

The battling Robins had failed to score in their previous three home games, but they ended the drought in fine style as May crashed an unstoppable drive past Jay Lynch from just inside the penalty area after 56 minutes.

May nearly added a second in time added on, but Cheltenham had done enough for their second win in their last 12 league games which lifted them four points clear of the relegation zone.

Fleetwood boss Scott Brown was unhappy with his side’s performance.

“We didn’t have a shot on target and that’s the biggest problem,” Brown said.

“They worked harder than we did and probably deserved it. Nobody wanted to make an impact on the game. It was a bit quiet, a bit safe.

“There’ll be a freshen-up because I can’t watch that again. There was just no energy. We need to make changes for the benefit of the team.

“Monday’s a big day. We’ll discuss it and we’ll get a response because there are places up for grabs.

“We didn’t have good delivery in the box. We went a wee bit too long, but we’ve got to be a bit smarter. We just went route one.”
