Carlos Corberan frustrated as defensive lapse costs West Brom in Blackburn draw

Carlos Corberan bemoaned a momentary defensive lapse after West Brom’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn at The Hawthorns.

Ben Brereton-Diaz cancelled out Jayson Molumby’s opener with one minute remaining of the SkyBet Championship clash.

Chile international Brereton-Diaz converted an 89th-minute free-kick after Molumby’s 73rd-minute header.

Molumby, the hero in the first instance, was culpable of conceding possession at the death before Brereton-Diaz stepped up to fire in the leveller.

The late equaliser brought to an end West Brom’s impressive home run of seven straight wins in all competitions – all of them with clean sheets.

Corberan cut a frustrated figure having seen his side manage the game and their lead well enough for his liking up to that stage.

“It’s clear that we lost two points and only won one. We were very close – after we scored the first goal we were closer to the second than they were to their first,” he said.

“Only one action of bad game management would cost us a goal – it was exactly this.

“It’s truly frustrating, we had to manage this action a different way.

“I think the game management until the last minute was excellent. Excellent, because every moment the team was deep, the team kept insisting to go.

“We were looking for the second goal and this is what I want to see from my team. We did it like this.”

Corberan’s opposing number Jon Dahl Tomasson was delighted by his side’s resilience in the face of that stern home record and their determination to respond having fallen behind with a little over 15 minutes of normal time remaining when Molumby struck.

It was the second impressive point on the road in a matter of days for Rovers, after their 1-1 draw at the home of another play-off rival Watford on Saturday.

“After the circumstances and being behind, in the 89th minute of course it is brilliant to score,” Tomasson said.

“We all knew West Brom’s home record has been excellent in the last period, it was a tough task for my players. I asked them to be brave and I thought they were extremely brave on the ball.

“I think we defended extremely well and we could also have won it! It was a big, big effort for the boys. Great to see that they were believing that they could come back. It was great.”
