Alexander Sorloth was named Real Sociedad's MVP of the month

Real Sociedad's star player Alexander Sorloth was handed a huge fish for winning the club's Most Valuable Player of the month award.

Sorloth banged in three goals in four of Sociedad's games in January, helping the club storm into third in La Liga behind second-placed Real Madrid and table-toppers Barcelona. And the hotshot striker, whose scored eight goals in 16 games this season, was given a large fish to mark the occasion.

He looked chuffed whilst posing with a chef who passed him the humongous sea creature in a basket with fresh herbs. And fans couldn't resist taking digs at the former Crystal Palace striker on Twitter.

One fan quipped: "Most Valuable Plaice." Then a second user mused: "1st plaice." And a third curious supporter asked: "Reckon he made fish pie with it?"

Most English fans will remember Sorloth from his spell with the Eagles who he joined for £9million back in 2018. But he was shipped out to RB Leipzig in 2020 after only scoring one goal in 20 appearances for Palace.

And he was sent on loan to Sociedad in 2021 where he's rediscovered his scoring boots. But Sorloth's not the first player to be awarded with a fish by Sociedad for winning the award. Arsenal star Martin Odegaard was also handed the bizarre prize when he won the player of the month award during his loan stint at the club in 2019.

A freshly groomed Odegaard awkwardly posed with the water animal as fans came along to take pictures. He was on loan from Real Madrid at the time, who brought the midfielder from Stromsgodset Fotball in 2015.

But Odegaard's arrival at the club was one to forget as he still cringes at the scruffy attire he wore during his unveiling at the Bernabeu. However, the Norwegian has come along way since then and picked up the Player of the Month award with Arsenal last month, although he wasn't given a fish this time to mark the occasion.
