Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has provided his response to the recent jibes of his counterparts at Liverpool and Manchester City, regarding the club’s January spending.
The subject of Chelsea’s winter reinforcement drive, of course, has proven the headline talking point in the English game for several weeks now.
This comes with the Blues, on the back of a nightmare first-half to the campaign, having opted to remedy their concerns courtesy of a jaw-dropping mid-season splurge.
All told, across the month of January, the board at Stamford Bridge closed deals for no fewer than eight players.
This included a British transfer record £107 million swoop for Benfica standout Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea’s spending, though, whilst a sight for sore eyes for the club’s frustrated fanbase, has drawn widespread criticism across the Premier League landscape.
Two high-profile individuals to have made their feelings that a £323 million outlay in the middle of the season is nothing short of ridiculous come in the form of the aforementioned Jurgen Klopp, and Pep Guardiola.
The former did so by suggesting that he would only feel comfortable talking publicly about Chelsea’s spending if a laywer was present.
Guardiola, meanwhile, insinuated that his Manchester City side would have been torn to shreds for similar spending.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of his peers’ jibes was put to Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
The under-fire Englishman, though, appeared altogether unfazed.
Assuring that naysayers are perfectly entitled to their opinions, Potter explained:
“It’s normal because we’ve spent the money we’ve spent. The media aren’t going to let that go under the radar, so all of football will be singing that song, that’s for sure.
“Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. It’s a free world, it’s free speech, which is good. [Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp] are entitled to their opinion. I don’t worry too much about that. They’ve got their right to speak. And that’s fair enough.”
