HBO TV series The Last Of Us has proven popular with fans
Fans are fearing the worst after a football club shared pictures of one of their player's boots that are housing an unknown and frankly disturbing new substance.
The recent cold snap has wreaked havoc over grassroots football fixtures up and down the country, with one club - Chalford AFC - not getting out on the pitch for six weeks. The Gloucestershire-based side, who play at step 12 of the English football pyramid, were once again beaten by the weather on Saturday as their league fixture against Brockworth Albion was postponed.
But it seems they could have bigger problems to contend with, if fans' scary assumptions are anything to go by...
Sharing a picture of a pair of their player's boots on Twitter, which had a weird, scaly, fungus-like substance growing on the bottom of them, Chalford's official account wrote: "Been 6 weeks since we’ve played and this is one of the lads boots, anyone got any idea what that is?!"
That sparked a debate in the comments, with followers putting forward their guesses with everything ranging from seaweed to noodles, and lasagne to "thrown up pasta". Others were simply dismayed by what they were seeing, with one user writing: "Mank", as another said: "That's got covid written all over it!"
One fan joked it could be a case of "athlete's boot" while another provided a more sinister diagnosis by suggesting it could be tetanus. However, of all the comments, the most concerning was one from award-winning TV presenter Richie Driss, who wrote: "Erm... have you heard of #TheLastOfUs."

The recently released HBO TV series has proved a hit with fans and the plot follows the same storyline which was originally depicted in the popular video games. The story revolves around the idea that a mutant fungus, Cordyceps , has taken over infected humans, causing them to mutate and attack fellow humans, often displaying cannibalistic behaviours.
The fungus completely obliterates the majority of the human race, leaving it on the brink of extinction. Of course, that's the plot in a fictional TV show - and an unlikely scenario in the changing rooms at Chalford AFC.
However, the more natural eventuality is that the poor player will just be punished for his ill-discipline after turning up to a matchday with dirty boots. Commenting on the original post asking what the fungus was, one user replied: "A fine?"
