Mohamed Salah has yet again found himself being criticised by Muslim fans on social media after posting a picture of him and his family next to a Christmas tree.

The Liverpool star, who is Muslim, posted on Twitter and Instagram with a caption that read: "#MerryChristmas". In an adorable snap with his wife and two daughters, Makka and Kayan, the young family all posed in matching pyjamas.

However, the 30-year-old has come under fire from some fans who took aim at his participation of the festivities that surround Christmas. Muslims do not traditionally celebrate the Christian holiday.

To his tweet, one fan replied: "You should acknowledge that many kids look up to you as a Muslim figure, this is not setting a good example brother."

Another wrote: "I shall be unfollowing you and stop supporting Liverpool because you are celebrating Christmas with the Christians."

And a third said: "Mo Salah, I loved you as a madrid fan. I viewed you as an excellent player and you always inspired me. However, after this tweet, I can no longer view you as my role model."

However, some praised the Egyptian with one writing back: "To us you are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe combined. Enjoy."

Another said: "The most anticipated Christmas post annually. Merry Christmas Mo."

Liverpool are back in Premier League action against Aston Villa on Boxing Day where they face Unai Emery's men in the later kick-off. The Reds are hoping to replicate their form from before the World Cup after a difficult start to the season.

Jurgen Klopp's team currently sit sixth in the table but a shot at the title might be too far away as they sit 15 points behind top-placed Arsenal.
