Japan were trailing 1-0 with just 15 minutes to go before an incredible double whammy sucker-punched the four-time World Cup winners and claimed them a famous 2-1 victory.

Winger Ritsu Doan, who plays his club football in the Bundesliga for Freiburg, pounced to equalise.

He needed just four minutes to make an impact after coming off the bench to stun Hansi Flick’s men.

But things got even worse for Germany just eight minutes later as they were caught on the counter.

Takuma Asano, who had previously been denied by a world class Manuel Neuer save, raced clear after beating the offside trap to fire home from a tight angle.

Germany were the favourites and looked to be heading for a routine victory after Ilkay Gundogan gave them the lead from the penalty spot just after the half hour mark.

But they were unable to add to their tally and they were punished late on, leaving them with an anxious wait ahead of their next Group E match against Spain on Sunday.
