Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was not best pleased with the way his side squandered chances

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was reluctant to handout praise to Nottingham Forest as they gifted his side "six clear-cut chances" during their 1-0 victory over the Reds. The German boss was not best pleased with the way his side squandered several golden opportunities in front of goal, claiming they should have ran out comfortable winners in the Midlands after their season took another unexpected twist.

Liverpool were looking to make it three wins on the bounce at Forest but last season's Championship play-off winners were able to absorb the pressure to hold onto a precious three points after a turbulent run that saw them fall to the foot of the Premier League table.

Yet Klopp was apprehensive to lavish Liverpool's opponents in praise despite their win, claiming the Reds only had themselves to blame due to their wastefulness in front of goal.

When asked whether he had any praise for Forest, Klopp said to Des Kelly: "Yeah but it's the Premier League, they're all good [teams] and fight.

"Giving a team six clear-cut chances after set pieces - I'm not sure where I should put the praise on to be honest.

"The things we did. They're a great team, Steve is a fantastic manager really but for us today, we have to win here. Done. But we didn't."

He then added: "Credit to Nottingham, it was us against the goalie, us against ourselves. It wasn't us against Nottingham in some moments because nobody defended Bobby in these moments, nobody defended Virg in these moments.

"They were just free. So use it. We use all of them, then you ask a different question."

Klopp was openly critical of both Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk, who both missed opportunities from set-pieces before Liverpool were made to pay.

Even after Forest went ahead through former Liverpool youngster Taiwo Awoniyi, Van Dijk had several chances to level but the Dutchman could not convert.

The best chance of the lot came in the dying embers when the Dutch defender forced Dean Henderson into a brilliant low stop but Klopp couldn't budge on the idea that his side should have won.

"The performance I can kind of explain, the result not to be honest. I never saw a game where one team has four or five no-brainers from a set piece where we have to finish it off. The way they defend we were perfectly prepared for that. We had to put the game to bed to be perfectly honest," he added.

"The goal we conceded was a big mistake from us. We lose the ball and give them the free-kick and this can happen around set pieces. Apart from that, all the chances they had we gave them. We had to make really late changes and in general a lot of changes and it's a game you have to win doing the right stuff again and again and again and we didn't. That's why we stand here and have lost the game.

"We arrived with consistency but we had six games with a limited squad playing three high intense games. That's how it is, we cannot change that and we have to fight through. Result-wise we should have showed consistency today. We could have had it by finishing situations off.

"Giving a team six clear chances after a set piece I'm not sure where I should put the praise to be honest. They are a great team and Steve is a great manager but for us today we have to win here and we didn't, so credit to Nottingham."

Liverpool sit in seventh place but they could fall as low as 10th by the close of play this weekend.

Forest have now moved off the bottom of the table with their second win of the season, overtaking Leicester.
