Manchester United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo received his lowest-ever ranking at this year's Ballon d'Or - even behind one of his team-mates.

The superstar, who was nominated among 29 other players on the shortlist, landed in 20th place - while Red Devils midfielder Casemiro received 17th place in the ceremony.

Ronaldo had also hit 20th spot in 2005 during his junior years at United, tying with Liverpool's Jamie Carragher. Though this year's result comes after a season where he was United's top scorer with 24 goals in 38 matches.

The Portuguese international has won a total of five Ballon d'Ors - the second-highest but still behind Lionel Messi, who has claimed a record seven titles. Ronaldo, who recently netted his 700th club career goal, won the accolade in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.

United team-mate Casemiro, who headed to Old Trafford from Real Madrid this summer, has played with many Ballon d'Or winners. As well as Ronaldo, the Brazilian midfielder played alongside Luka Modric at Los Blancos.

Back in 2018, when the Croatian won the award, Casemiro spoke out about whether Ronaldo should have won - saying that Modric, who won the Golden Ball at the World Cup after leading Croatia, should not have won that year..

Casemiro said: "Luka's year has been spectacular - but in my opinion, I would give it to Cristiano Ronaldo because he has been the best throughout last season."

The same year Ronaldo fired Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League trophy before he left for Juventus.

Last year's winner Messi hasn't made the shortlist this year. The PSG attacker missed out on the 30-man shortlist for what was a tepid campaign for the Ligue 1 champions.
