Liverpool attempted a late swoop for Real Madrid star Federico Valverde before the transfer window slammed shut earlier this month.

The Reds have seen their midfield gutted through a spate of injuries that have already seen Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, and Naby Keita sidelined. Jurgen Klopp eventually moved for Juventus' Arthur Melo - who the Reds secured on loan for the season.

However, they only moved for the Brazilian after the Reds saw their bid for Valverde rebuffed by Real. Liverpool, according to Spanish outlet Diario AS, saw their bid of £86.5million turned down from the Spanish giants.

According to the report, Real saw the offer as 'brutal' and 'offensive', and Los Blancos dismissed any idea they would move the Uruguayan on.

However, if Real had sanctioned the sale, only Cristiano Ronaldo's sale in 2018 - when he swapped Madrid for Turin - would have earned Los Blancos a higher windfall. Valverde is under contract until 2027, and he remains a key part of Carlo Ancelotti's side.

And Ancelotti's faith in the Uruguayan has been rewarded this season.

Carlo Ancelotti has called Federico Valverde as one of Real Madrid's most important players

Valverde has already registered two goals and two assists this season, and his boss had glowed about his output: "One is a leader when he sets an example and Federico is very important for us.

"He’s doing very well and is still very humble. This can help you to become a terrific leader in the future. There are a lot of people who can be leaders by example and not by their words. That’s very important.”
