Queen Elizabeth II was well loved for her sense of humour during her 70-year reign - and once left football fans smiling when asked if she would watch an England game at the World Cup.

The beloved monarch was asked back in 1998 whether she would be tuning into the Three Lions' round of 16 contest having finished second in Group G following fixtures in Marseille, Toulouse and Lens.

On a walk to meet members of the public ahead of that fixture, Her Majesty was asked if she would make time to watch the highly-anticipated clash against Argentina.

The Queen said: "Well, I don’t know, what time is it?"

After being told the game would kick off at 8pm the Queen exclaimed: "Oh, I’ve got a dinner party!"

When asked if she would be cheering on England regardless, she added: "Well, I think one should, we’re going to have a very difficult job I think."

When the clip was reposted on YouTube earlier this year, one viewer said in response: "She’s just a model of politeness and good manners."

With a second adding: "The Queen is so relatable even in that small interaction."

A third continued: "A wonderful sense of humor and Her Majesty's beautiful smile!" And a fourth agreed: "Her mannerism are so lovely."

Michael Owen, who was in the England side who lost to Argentina on penalties that day, was among the sporting figures who paid tribute following her peaceful passing.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," Buckingham Palace said.

With the former striker saying: "RIP to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Thank you Ma'am for your lifetime of service and dedication."
