Football fans have been left horrified at a picture of Rio Ferdinand dressed as a schoolgirl at a Leeds United fancy dress party in the early 2000s.

Ferdinand started his career at West Ham but joined Leeds in 2000 and made 73 appearances for the Whites before moving on to Manchester United in 2002 for a fee of £29.3million. The 43-year-old defender played for the Yorkshire club during their golden era under David O'Leary when they reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Leeds not only had a tremendous young squad during that magnificent spell, they also had a superb team spirit, something former star Dominic Matteo seemed keen to remind Ferdinand about on social media.

The ex-Scotland international tweeted a picture of himself, Ferdinand and Michael Duberry at a fancy dress party in the early-2000s. While Matteo and Duberry went as schoolboys, Ferdinand chose to go as a school girl.

Wearing a skirt, a wig, lipstick and with a bag draped over his shoulder, Ferdinand fully committed to the look, much to the horror of fans seeing it for the first time on social media.

One person wrote: "I need to get that image of Rio out my head now. Thanks." As someone else said: "When the lights turn on in the club and she isn't a 10/10 anymore."

A third person added: "Best photo I've seen of Rio." While another user commented: "That’s me having sleepless nights!" A fifth user simply put: "Bloody hell."

Ferdinand still holds a fondness towards the Whites but admitted in 2019 that he piled on the pressure to force through his lucrative move to Old Trafford.

"At Leeds I went and sat in [club chairman] Mr [Peter] Ridsdale's office and waited for about five-and-a-half, six hours and said to him, 'I'm not going until you sort out a deal for me to go to Man United'," Ferdinand revealed to BT Sport. "I didn't go public.

"We reached a compromise, a situation where he felt he was getting the right part of the deal and I got my opportunity to go to Man United. I was adamant I wanted to go because I felt that was the right time and right move for me."
