Manchester United are keen to sign Begovic as their number two goalkeeper, a player with extensive experience in the Premier League and beyond, who they see as the perfect replacement for David De Gea. But they face considerable resistance as Lampard is determined to keep Begovic.

United have been looking for a number two following Henderson's move to Nottingham Forest, with United goalkeeper Tom Heaton their third choice this season.

Begovic was number one at Stoke City and has played for AC Milan, Chelsea and other European clubs before moving to Everton last year. Everton need to find a suitable replacement for Begovic before he leaves, but many Everton fans believe he will not leave the club until his contract expires next summer.

David De Gea was backed up by Erik ten Hag, who said: "I'm sure he can put in a convincing performance," despite a number of lowly errors in United's 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

De Gea is also currently in the final year of his contract with United, who have the option of extending his contract for another season, meaning there is a strong possibility that United will extend his contract until 2024. In addition, United have been linked with Monchengladbach goalkeeper Sommer, who is under contrack until 2023 and is now keen to sign him to a new deal.
