'Justin Bieber wearing a Brighton shirt? How can this week get any worse?'

Manchester United can probably take getting trolled by rival fans and Brighton's social media team - but getting trolled by Justin Bieber? That's a new low.

The 28-year-old Canadian pop sensation was spotted holding a Brighton top mere hours after Graham Potter's Seagulls sealed a 2-1 win over United at Old Trafford.

Granted, Bieber probably wasn't totally aware of the significance, having been handed the shirt by Brighton-supporting singer Sam Tompkins after bumping into him backstage at a gig in Norway, though it doesn't make it any less embarrassing for United fans.

It isn't the first time the Love Yourself singer has been spotted with a footy shirt from England.

He had a kickabout with Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres at Stamford Bridge wearing a Chelsea top back in 2011 and has been spotted wearing an Everton jersey in the past … for some reason, and last year he was gifted a Southend United shirt after appearing at Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball. What an honour.

The Erik ten Hag era got off to the worst possible start on Sunday with Pascal Groß's double helping seal a mammoth victory for Brighton on the opening weekend of the Premier League.

It got even worse when Brighton's Twitter account rubbed salt in the wounds by tweeting: "Just like Brighton, your city is blue" - a chant that was heard in the away end at Old Trafford all afternoon - immediately after the game.

However, nothing could've prepared United for being accidentally savaged by the object of obsession for pre-teens around the globe.
