A cold, hard rejection from Paul Pogba
Paul Pogba refused to sign a Manchester United shirt after he landed in Turin to complete his emotional return to Juventus.
The Frenchman turned down offers from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to make the comeback to the club where he made a huge name for himself. Fervent Juve fans clamoured to get a glimpse of the player - with stretched-out arms aplenty in the hope of an autograph.
But one fan decided it would be a good idea to bring along their Man United jersey. Footage shows Pogba taking one glance at the shirt, before ultimately opting not to sign it, with one Man United fan commenting: "Respect goes both ways."
The midfielder - once the world’s most expensive player - left Man United after failing to agree on a new contract with the club, while there were concerns over his inconsistencies on the field.
As the saga unfolded with his move to Juventus, Pogba released a docuseries, 'The Pogmentary', with the show’s contents leaving some Man United fans rather angry at how he handled the contract offer.
Pogba, 29, left Turin in 2016 and was mobbed by thousands of fans to welcome him back to the city. It is thought he has had to take a significant pay cut and will now earn around £6.8m a year on a three-year contract, making for around £160,00 a week.
It’s a figure that’s far less than the £300,000 that United offered for him - but it appears that the player just wanted to get away. Pogba made 178 appearances for the Old Lady - where he scored 34 times and won the Scudetto on four separate occasions.
Pogba recently spoke about his mental well-being while at Man United. “From a personal perspective, that started when I was with Jose Mourinho at Manchester. You ask yourself if there is something wrong with you, because you have never experienced these moments in your life,” he said via The Guardian.
“Of course, we earn a lot of money and we don’t complain, really. But that does not prevent you from going through these moments in your life – like the whole world – which are more difficult than others. In football, it is not acceptable but we are not superheroes, we are only human beings.”
