Ronaldo may not fit into Ten Hag's plans
Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo could make a stunning return to Real Madrid this summer window.
The recently-crowned La Liga champions are reportedly hopeful of bringing their all-time top goal-scorer back to the Santiago Bernabeu, according to the Mirror.
Ronaldo, 37, has enjoyed another high-scoring campaign at Old Trafford following his £12.85 million move from Juventus last summer, netting 23 goals in all competitions. But it is thought that influential key figures in Madrid believe bringing Ronaldo back to Spain would bolster the side’s attacking options next season.
The superstar penned a two-year deal with United, while there is an option of another year if both parties are satisfied.
But the Portugal international signed with United when Ole GunnarSolskjaer was at the helm and the landscape has changed incredibly over the last ten months or so, with Ralf Rangnick now in the dugout.
The club announced last month that Ajax boss Erik ten Hag would be taking over from the German when the season ends, while there has been a huge number of changes in the scouting and executive departments at United.
It is understood that Madrid - the club he scored 450 goals from 2009 to 2018 - would be willing to take him back and offer the attacker a decent amount of playing time. It's a move that may come into fruition as, though Solskjaer and Rangnick have almost always used Ronaldo, it’s not clear whether incoming boss Ten Hag has the same idea.
The Dutchman is reported to be looking at revamping United under a model of youth and high energy. This could well mean that Ronaldo will be ushered out - or that he at least will not be a prominent name on the team sheet each week.
Ronaldo, who scored his 100th Premier League goal last month, envisioned a different time playing for last season’s runners-up, with it thought that they could close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool. That has not happened and United are enduring something of a crisis.
