Fans have slammed the quality of food inside Hampden Park’s hospitality dining during Celtic and Rangers' Scottish FA Cup semi-final tie.

A post featuring an image uploaded to Twitter appeared to show what was on the menu for football fans sitting in the VIP seating for the Old Firm derby. But there was nothing classy about the food on offer, with a bland helping of unseasoned chips accompanying a small and dry beefburger.

Supporters would have paid at least three times the average ticket price to attend the game, so to be left with a disappointing plate would have left some unhappy. Worse yet, the beef patty had been likened to a “meatball”, such was the ungenerous size of the meat in comparison to the bun.

It did not take long for the photo to go viral on Twitter after it was shared by the 'Footie Scran' Twitter account. The craze of rating football clubs’ offerings of food has become more prominent due to the popularity of ‘footie scran’, with a dedicated Twitter account sharing fans’ images of food at grounds all around Europe.

And fans tore apart the state of the unappetising burger, with some humorous results. One user wrote: “I would be so embarrassed serving this and even more so sending it out of my kitchen,” while another corrected the caption by adding: “*meatball and chips.”

That joke appeared over and over as fans flocked in to mock the disgraceful burger in front of their eyes: “They seem to have gave you a meatball instead of a burger Patty, pal,” one Twitter user said. Another tweeted: “Burger vans serve better food that would never leave the pass in my kitchen as well if one of my chef put that up.”

Some plates of food have gone from the outrageously plain to surprisingly gourmet, with non-league outfit Ebbsfleet United’s upper range of snacks — including hot dogs and chill fries — proving a hit with fans.

But it is fair to say that Celtic and Rangers fans who were lucky enough to be perched in the VIP seats would have been most unimpressed if their food was just as bland as the dish featured in the image. Premium seating at Hampden Park, which gives matchgoers the best view and have access to the bar, start from £150 per person according to the stadium’s official website.

Fortunately, the football was a big improvement on the burger, as the two teams could not be separated after a closely-fought 1-1 draw in 90 minutes. Greg Taylor put the Hoops in front on 64 minutes before Scott Arfield grabbed an equaliser late on, with a place in the final against Hearts or Hibernian on May 21 up for grabs. Hopefully, by then, the menu would have undergone a major improvement.
