Antoine Griezmann leaves nobody indifferent. The French footballer, who returned to Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window, is going through a run that he has never experienced so far under Diego Simeone.
Much has already been written about Griezmann's return to Los Rojiblancos, but the reality today is that he is not at the level that the coaching staff would have expected.
With seven games left this season, Griezmann's record is poor. No one can question the effort and work he puts in on the pitch. Or even that this involvement could diminish his offensive performance.
It is just as true that in the last Champions League matches he has operated far away from the opponents' area as it is that his exit from the field improved Atletico's performance in a lot of matches.
Very poor numbers
With eight goals in the whole season, only three in the LaLiga Santander, we are far from seeing the best version of the Frenchman. After returning from injury against Manchester United in the first leg of the round of 16, he was gaining presence in the team again.
Little by little he was included in Simeone's plans until Angel Correa's injury at the Estadio Benito Villamarin brought him back into the starting line-up against Cadiz. It was at Real Betis where he offered one of his best performances.
Against Cadiz he finally returned to the XI. Still far from his best, Simeone opted to take him off after 60 minutes when the score was level at 1-1. Then came Rodrigo De Paul's goal that would give the victory to Los Colchoneros.
After that win came Griezmann's two best games so far this season. The visit to Old Trafford where he assisted Renan Lodi and the win at Vallecas. His two best performances had more to do with the defensive and work rate than anything he offered in attack.
Since the international break, which followed the win at Vallecas, Griezmann has been Simeone's first withdrawal in four consecutive games.
It's clear that things aren't going to plan for the Frenchman since he returned to the capital last summer.
