Newcastle are 'growing increasingly hopeful' of signing Christian Eriksen.

The Danish player, 30, is currently at Brentford but his contract is up in the summer. The former Tottenham attacker has enjoyed a brilliant spell on his return to football following his cardiac arrest while on international duty during Euro 2020 and this has consequently garnered interest from rival clubs.

He left Inter Milan and joined the Bees on a short-term contract until the end of the season. And now it appears that the Magpies are growing 'hopeful' that they will be able to get the Dane to sign for them during the summer window

The Northern Echo says that interest is certainly there by the club, who are of the belief that a deal could come to fruition. Sources told the paper that they see Eriksen as a possible ‘flagship’ signing.

But the side will face competition from Manchester United who also have eyes on the player, as well as his former club Tottenham. But Brentford boss Thomas Frank is still hopeful of convincing him to stay in west London.

"'The thing is that I don't think anything will be decided before the end of the season. We are interested for him to stay, massively - I would love that,' he said before his side's ahead of his club’s win over West Ham last Sunday.

"When or when not that is confirmed, that's where we can say something. I could say we're speaking every week or we're not speaking every week but it's actually irrelevant. I think you all understand we would like to keep him and it's up to Christian to find out what he wants to do. 'I think we have a chance (of keeping him) - 100 per cent.”

Eriksen signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Serie A club Inter in 2020. Last summer while playing in Denmark's opening group stage match against Finland in Copenhagen, he collapsed in the 42nd minute owing to a massive heart attack.

It was announced that the former Spurs star could no longer play in the Serie A due to the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator he had implanted. He signed for the Bees to play under Thomas Frank on the final day of the transfer window, in what was an emotional return to the Premier League
