Police to investigate Cristiano Ronaldo for damaging Everton fan's phone

Cristiano Ronaldo has apologised for his outburst after appearing to throw a fan's phone to the ground in the aftermath of Manchester United's 1-0 defeat to Everton, however he could yet be in hot water with the Merseyside police.

Footage from social media showed Ronaldo lowering his right hand towards the ground, before allegedly throwing a fan's phone when walking down the tunnel at Goodison Park.

"It's never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing," said Ronaldo on Instagram.

"Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game. I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship."

Merseyside police will investigate Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United say they are aware of the footage and are yet to make any statement about the incident.

Meanwhile, the local police force are going to speak with witnesses and investigate what happened.

"Merseyside police can confirm that they're carrying out an investigating following an incident at the Everton vs Manchester United match at Goodison involving a Manchester United player as they were walking off the pitch and will be speaking to all parties involved," the Twitter account of the Everton Matchday Police Officers said.

It was another difficult day for United, who have just won one of their last seven games in all competitions, including a defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

A top four spot to secure a Champions League spot for next season is out of the Red Devils' hands, as they are in seventh, six points behind Tottenham Hotspur.
