Erik ten Hag is poised to become the next Manchester United manager.

United have agreed a deal with ten Hag to take charge in June once he has finished the current season with Ajax.

The Dutchman has agreed personal terms on a long-term deal and will replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to take up a football director role at Old Trafford this summer.

United interviewed ten Hag, 52, last month and were said to be impressed with his long-term vision for the team.

United had also spoken to Mauricio Pochettino as well as sounded out Spain boss Luis Enrique, but have opted for ten Hag after the board agreed to make him their No.1 candidate.

United were not prepared to wait until after the World Cup to get Enrique, while the difficulties endured by Pochettino at Paris Saint Germain this season, coupled with the potential £15m cost of releasing him from his contract, have left ten Hag in pole position to get the job.

It's understood ten Hag has warned United CEO Richard Arnold he will need several years to transform the team into one capable of winning the biggest trophies again.

He has also provided Arnold with a long list of transfer targets - and the United chief has vowed to spend whatever it takes to give him the players he needs.

Football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher will lead the recruitment process alongside ten Hag.

United will have to give Ajax around £2m in compensation for ten Hag, depending on how many of his current coaching staff he decides to take with him from Ajax to Manchester.

ten Hag has found it impossible to turn down the chance to manage United, despite knowing he faces a huge challenge when it comes to resurrecting the fortunes of the fallen giants.

United have not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the Champions League since 2008 and face a losing battle to even secure a top four finish this season and qualification for Europe's elite competition.
