Blackpool goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw had to be given oxygen before being rushed to hospital after suffering a horrific injury on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old was involved in a nasty collision with Preston North End forward Cameron Archer during the first half of their Championship meeting at Deepdale. Grimshaw received immediate treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off the field and taken to the Royal Preston hospital following the injury.

The former Manchester City stopper was caught by Archer's knee as the pair challenged for the ball, with the match immediately stopped by referee David Webb so Grimshaw could be seen to.

Play was stopped for almost 10 minutes as Blackpool's medical staff rushed onto the pitch to treat Grimshaw before he was placed on a stretcher. He received a round of applause from both sets of fans as he was substituted off in the 20th minute before being taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston hospital.

Grimshaw's replacement, Chris Maxwell, was beaten by Archer in first-half stoppage time as the striker on loan from Aston Villa bagged the only goal of the game.

Maxwell had been Blackpool's first choice between the sticks at the start of the season before being displaced by Grimshaw, who has been enjoying a fine season at Bloomfield Road.

Having made his debut against Middlesbrough in the League Cup in August, Grimshaw was first choice by the Autumn and has missed just two matches since October.

He has gone on to make 29 appearances for Blackpool this season, keeping nine clean sheets and conceding just 27 goals in all competitions.

Grimshaw is in his first season with the Seasiders having arrived on a free transfer from City in the summer, having failed to make a senior appearance at the Etihad Stadium after progressing through the club's academy.
