Non-league footballer dies suddenly prompting tributes to 'special lad'
Non-league football is in mourning following the tragic death of Redditch United footballer Thomas Rankin, after the club announced his passing on Sunday morning

Redditch United footballer Thomas Ranking has sadly passed away, the club announced on Sunday
Tributes have flooded in for non-league footballer Thomas Rankin who has unexpectedly passed away in his mid-20s.
Rankin played for Redditch United of the Southern League Premier Division Central. The club announced the sad loss of the player, who had been with the side for three seasons, on social media on Sunday.
In a statement the club said: "Redditch United are devastated to hear of passing of midfielder Thomas Rankin. Tom has been with the Reds for the past three seasons. His loss will be felt by all at the club. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. RIP Tom."
In a Facebook post, Rankin's parents Wendy and Bob posted an emotional tribute to their late son. His mum said: "Tom you are the best son, you have always made us so proud, you are our world. There are no words for how much we will miss you."
"You have achieved so much in your short life. We would give everything to have you back with us. Rest in Peace with all our love Mom and Dad."
Rankin was listed among the substitutes for Redditch as they took on AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday afternoon. According to the club's Twitter feed, he came on at half-time.
Rushden were among the club's to pay tribute to Rankin on social media following the tragic news of his passing. They said: "Having been with you all yesterday, We are devastated to read this awful news this afternoon. Our thoughts are with you all and with Tom’s friends & family."
Redditch manager Matt Clarke added his own tribute, tweeting: "Life is so precious people. We often take things for granted i know I do. In reality certain things really aren’t that important in the grand scheme of things. A special person left us today and words cannot describe how special this lad was."
Tens of non-league clubs offered their condolences to Redditch and Rankin's family on social media, with Matlock Town, Leamington Spa and Stourbridge FC among those leading the tributes.
National League North side Kidderminster Harriers tweeted: "On behalf of everyone at Aggborough, our thoughts and wishes are with all at Redditch United and especially Thomas’s family and friends at what is a truly sad time."
