Former Aston Villa captain Agbonlahor criticised the injured Trippier for travelling with the Newcastle squad for their 2-0 win over Brentford.

Trippier picked up a foot injury in the narrow win over Aston Villa

He told Football Insider: "People will see that as amazing because he's supporting the team but I see it as silly.

"You’ve got an injury, you’re on crutches, you should be at home with your feet up to rest the injury not struggling around on such a long trip to Brentford. I don’t see the point in that."

The Magpies beat an in-form Southampton side 2-1 on Thursday thanks to goals by January arrivals Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes.

And in response to Agbonlahor, Trippier photoshopped himself into the dressing room celebrations.

The England international captioned the post: "Always supporting the boys! I hope that’s allowed…"

Newcastle's win lifts them ten points clear of the drop zone.

Eddie Howe's side are also unbeaten in their last NINE league games, with their last loss coming against Manchester City in December last year.

On yesterday's win, Howe said: "It’s a really tough place to come, especially when you’re a goal down and not playing at your best level.

"There were some really good individual performances among a team performance that probably won’t rank as our best.

"I felt we needed to change things tactically.

"Martin [Dubravka] had to make a couple of really good saves, but we weren’t under big pressure.

"I thought we were a little bit wasteful with the ball at times, which is a frustration."
