EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal are desperate for a striker in the transfer window after Mikel Arteta’s request and Gunners legend Perry Groves reckons Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the answer this summer

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been identified as Arsenal’s best option in the transfer window at the end of the season.

That is the verdict from ex-Gunners star Perry Groves, who reckons Mikel Arteta only has one ambition this summer.

The Emirates outfit have ambitions of finishing in the top four this campaign and currently are one point ahead of Manchester United with three games in hand.

But there has been a clear piece missing from the puzzle in the form of a striker and Arteta knows it.

The Spaniard was desperate to sign a forward in January after missing out on Dusan Vlahovic while the Spaniard has already admitted he is looking to bolster his strike force.

And Groves believes that Everton star Calvert-Lewin is the ideal target and his old club should make him their priority this summer.

Speaking at the London Football Awards, he told Daily Star Sport: “Without a shadow of a doubt, they need a centre-forward [in the summer].

"I don’t think they are going to re-sign Alexandre Lacazette. I am a big fan of Lacazette, the quality he brings players in around him with the physicality.

"Obviously his goalscoring output has dropped substantially over the last 18 months but the money and the wages he is on, I don’t think they will renew for that sort of money.

"I would bring in someone like [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin. I think he would fit in perfect, his attitude is good, taught by Carlo Ancelotti and off the ball he can close down and press.”

Calvert-Lewin is among the strikers being looked at by Arsenal, as well as Real Sociedad ace Alexander Isak and Espanyol star Raul de Tomas.

As well as Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah is also out of contract at the end of the season which could see both depart and leave the Gunners without a recognised frontman.

And Arteta has already explained what kind of striker he is looking for in the summer.

"He puts the ball in the net, that’s priority number one. Goal threat,” he said.

"Any successful team needs enough goal threat in the squad. Without it, you have nothing. You can play good football but you need enough goal threat in the team.

"The other thing is that he has to complement the other people we have, personally and on the pitch, and for that, we need the right profile.

"We need a profile where you can exploit his qualities at the same time as the qualities we already have, so we don’t have to transform our way of playing again to adapt to that specific player.

"He has to have a certain age, a certain level of experience, and he has to be able to come here and play under the pressure of being at Arsenal.”
