And he is currently in Manchester to receive radiotherapy treatment.

River comes from a Midlands family of Wolves supporters.

But being in Manchester has seen him link up with some of the city’s top footballers.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jack Grealish are just two who have met River and sent him heart-warming messages.

And it was Man Utd skipper Maguire this week who met up with the brave lad for a kickabout and talk over the latest football news.

Maguire was clearly touched by the encounter and took to Twitter to send River an uplifting message.

Maguire, who also presented the kid with a bag of Man Utd goodies, wrote: “Absolute pleasure to meet this legend today.

"A great chat and even better kick about. Thanks River. Stay strong.”

United teammate Ronaldo was snapped fist-bumping River at a game and wrote on social media: “Children are and will always be the best thing the world has to offer, and we must protect them at all costs.

"Supporters are and always will be the best in football, and we must respect everything they face and endure for their clubs.”

Jesse Lingard also sent River a message, saying: “Pleasure to meet you River.

"You’re an inspirational young man battling cancer and winning. Stay strong and keep fighting.”

Chelsea legend John Terry also met River, saying: “An absolute pleasure meeting you today River. Stay strong mate.

"Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt. You made a little boy very happy with your kindness of inviting River and the family to your hotel.”
