'Something went wrong' - Conte hits out at 'strange' Tottenham transfer moves after Ndombele, Alli and others leave on loan

The Italian is hoping to see a more sensible strategy moving forward after admitting mistakes had been made

Antonio Conte has admitted "something went wrong in the past" with Tottenham's transfer strategy after the club saw several players exit in the January window.

Several former big-money transfers, including club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele, departed as Spurs made a number of changes.

And the club's manager is hoping for an improved policy moving forward after admitting Spurs made "mistakes" in past windows.

What was said?

"For sure, it was strange. It was strange to send on loan, and sell one player, in the January transfer window," Conte told the media.

"It was strange because it means something went wrong in the past.

"It was strange, I repeat in January to send four on loan, and sell one player. It means maybe in the past, you have to see what you did. And maybe to understand that there were some mistakes in the past.

"Because usually you have to buy players to reinforce your team.

"But if you send away players on loan you bought in the last two or three years, it means maybe you did something wrong in the past.”

Tottenham's January moves

Spurs saw Ndombele (Lyon), Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal) and Bryan Gil (Valencia) all leave the club on loan in January, while Dele Alli made a permanent move to Everton.

The club did bring in players of their own as well, as Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur moved to north London from Conte's former side Juventus.

Conte said he is looking forward to seeing the pair with Spurs, saying: "These two players can help us a lot.

"For sure now the squad is more complete. We tried to fill the right role with a midfielder - Bentacur - and Kulusevski, who can play as No.10 or a wing-back.

"Now we are more complete than before. Now is time to work."
