Liverpool still have high hopes that they can land Fulham's Fabio Carvalho after seeing a deadline day move for the youngster collapse at the last minute.
An £8million fee had been agreed between the two clubs, but the paperwork necessary to finalise the move wasn't completed before the 11pm deadline on Monday - despite Neco Williams' loan move to Craven Cottage successfully going through.
Liverpool are understood to still be in talks with Carvalho over a summer move, and are hoping to resolve the matter without the need for a tribunal to determine a fee.
But because the midfielder's contract is up in the summer, they now face the prospect of other clubs swooping in to pinch the player, with reported interest from Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and even Chelsea.
Liverpool are still hopefully of sealing a deal for Fulham's Fabio Carvalho
FA rules dictate that Fulham are entitled to receive compensation if he leaves the club on a free transfer, having developed the 19-year-old for seven years.
If he leaves for an overseas club that figure would be £500,000, but will likely be a lot higher if he moves to a Premier League team.
As part of the initial agreement struck with Liverpool, Carvalho was to be loaned back to Fulham for the remainder of the season, so little has changed about the player's immediate future.
Liverpool agreed an £8 million fee for Carvalho on deadline day, but didn't complete the paperwork in time to seal the deal
But whether he'll still end up at Anfield next season is another question, especially with the prospect of a tricky tribunal to navigate.
There's now time for Fulham to potentially renegotiate terms, and even convince Carvalho to sign an extension, though that remains unlikely at this point.
The feeling in both camps is that the England U18 star will be a Liverpool player next season, but there's still a fair bit to sort out before then.
