Newcastle have sounded out Jesse Lingard for a loan deal - but it's thought that the attacker would much rather another move to London following his success at West Ham last year

Newcastle have reignited their interest in Jesse Lingard and wish to sign the Manchester United attacker on a loan move - but they may have faced a stumbling block.

According to Manchester Evening News, Lingard could be shipped out on loan to a Premier League club in January for a consecutive time.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and it would be the Red Devil’s only realistic chance of securing a fee for the player.

Newcastle are willing to cover the entire cost of the player’s wages - which are at £100,000-per-week - for the remainder of the season.

It’s not entirely clear yet whether Lingard is willing to make the move to St James’ Park, as the report states a move to London is preferred.

The former England international enjoyed a brilliant loan spell last season with West Ham.

There were discussions that he may even sign for the club permanently, but the deal didn’t materialise and he remained in the northwest.

It’s understood that Lingard, who will not be in the United squad tonight to play Brentford owing to an ankle injury, would rather hold out for a move to England's capital.

Tottenham are interested in signing Lingard permanently in the summer, but United do not wish to strengthen a rival who are so close to them in the Premier League table.

Indeed, West Ham wanted to sign Lingard permanently in the summer after he enjoyed a great spell at the London Stadium with a return of nine goals in 16 games - but former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snubbed the move.

Lingard has not started in the Premier League start for United since New Year's Day 2020, and a move to the northeast could suit the player as he wishes to make a play for the England squad for the World Cup in November.

Discussions are around a deal with no option to buy, meaning should Newcastle drop down to the Championship, Lingard will see himself with further options once more in the summer.
