Eriksen retirement off the table: He is in talks with Brentford

Christian Eriksen is in talks with Brentford over a remarkable return to professional football, just seven months after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening fixture at Euro 2020.

The Danish midfielder was released by Inter in December due to a Serie A rule which does not allow players to play with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

The Telegraph have reported that negotiations are underway between Eriksen and the Bees over a move until the end of the current season.

Such a deal would enable the 29-year-old to fulfil his dream of representing his country at the World Cup, which takes place in Qatar later this year.

Eriksen previously worked with Thomas Frank, the Brentford head coach, in the Denmark youth teams, and would share the Bees' dressing room with a number of his international teammates, such as Mathias Jorgensen, Mathias Jensen and Christian Norgaard.

Eriksen wants to play
At the start of January, Eriksen said in an interview with Danish TV that he is ready to play professional football again.

"My goal is to play in the World Cup in Qatar," said Eriksen.

"I want to play. That's been my mindset all along. It's a goal, a dream. Whether I'll be picked is another thing. But it's my dream to come back.

"I'm sure I can because I don't feel any different. Physically, I'm back in top shape.

"My dream is to rejoin the national team and play at Parken [Stadium] again and prove that [the incident in which he collapsed] was a one-timer and that it won't happen again.

"I want to prove I've moved on and that I can play [for] the national team again. Again, it's up to the manager to assess my level. But my heart is not an obstacle."

Should Eriksen complete his move to Brentford, his future at the club would be re-assessed at the conclusion of the campaign.
