Newcastle will reportedly have to overcome a battle with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace if they are to land Juventus star Aaron Ramsey this month. The Magpies are in desperate need of reinforcements as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle have won just one game in all competitions this season and are 19th in the Premier League table.

On Saturday they suffered the ignominy of being dumped out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage as they lost to League One strugglers Cambridge United at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s team had plenty of opportunities to win the game but were once again lacklustre in front of goal and were made to pay as Joe Ironside struck the winner for the minnows.

Howe will now turn his attentions back to the Premier League and knows he must spend wisely during this month’s transfer window to give his side the best chance of staying up.

The Magpies have already signed England right-back Kieran Trippier in recent days and will need proven players who can hit the ground running in the northeast.

Aaron Ramsey has been tipped to make a return to the Premier League this month

Ramsey is reportedly being targeted by Newcastle but, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Palace have made an offer to sign the midfielder.

The Wales international departed the Premier League in the summer of 2019 to move to Juve. And he is contracted to the Old Lady until 2023.

But he has fallen out of favour in Turin after seeing his Juventus career hampered by a string of injuries.

Ramsey has faced lengthy spells on the sidelines during each of his three campaigns in Italy and has only appeared five times in all competitions this season.

The former Cardiff City youngster last played for Juventus in October as he came on as a substitute in his team’s Champions League win over Zenit St Petersburg.

But he hasn’t played in Serie A since the end of September.

Ramsey is thought to currently earn around £112,500 a week – and Juventus are keen to get his wages off their books.

A number of other Premier League clubs have been linked with the player in recent months, with the likes of Brighton and Aston Villa also rumoured to be interested.

A move to the Eagles, however, could be Ramsey’s best bet as it would allow him to link up with legendary Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira.

The World Cup winner played 397 times for the Gunners and was part of Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles side during the 2003/04 campaign.

Vieira moved into management after hanging up his boots in 2011 and took over at Selhurst Park last summer following the departure of Roy Hodgson.

And working with the 45-year-old could prove to be an attractive opportunity for Ramsey given his Arsenal links.
