Spanish outlet SPORT reports that United could trigger his £17million buy-out clause to avoid the need for any negotiation, with competition from a string of European giants.

The report adds that United look to have beaten Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid to the front of talks.

Agent Fernando Hidalgo could fly to England to sort a deal at some point this month with Anthony Martial pushing for a loan deal away from Old Trafford.

5 ft 7 in tall Alvarez has made a total of five appearances for Argentina since his debut against Chile back in June, but is still looking for his first senior goal despite being a Copa America winner.

When asked about his plans for the window following their 3-1 win over Burnley, Rangnick said: "The transfer window in the winter only makes sense if they increase the quality.

"So far we have not spoken about that.

"My focus is on the current players, we have enough players so there is no lack of numbers."

Having said of Martial's desire to leave: “He explained to me he’s been at Manchester United now for the last seven years and he feels it’s the right time for a change, to go somewhere else.

"I think in a way this is understandable, I could follow his thoughts, but on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club.

“We have Covid times, we have three competitions in which we still have high ambitions and we want to be as successful as we can be."
