Dundee FC were forced to name a vastly depleted squad for their Boxing Day clash with Aberdeen.

Dave Mackay, Dundee's assistant manager, was named among the four substitutes that also included two goalkeepers and a teenager.

Mackay hasn't played professional football for just over five years, since he hung up his boots at St Johnstone in 2016.

However, due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the Dundee camp, Dee's boss James McPake was forced to register his No.2 for the side.

Dundee had attempted to postpone the game, but the SPFL denied their request leading to the farcical situation on Boxing Day.

McPake hammered the situation in his post-match interview: “It was more about the way it was handled. It was just about it being black and white — you've got that (13 players) so go out and play.

“That's putting people's families at risk — and, let's say it, their lives at risk or their loved ones at risk.

“My captain (Jordan McGhee) today has a three-day old baby and now he's got to go back to his house.

“Do I feel comfortable with that? No.

“My mum is 89 and I've been getting my two-year-old to do a lateral flow test every day this week so she could come for Christmas dinner.

“Do I feel comfortable with that? No.”

Dundee had taken a surprise lead through Leigh Griffiths in the seventh minute.

But McPake's side hadn't been in front for long, and the Dons levelled the game five minutes later before Lewis Ferguson clinched the clash in the 70th minute.
