Gerrard has tested positive for Covid-19 and will be isolating during the Christmas period meaning he will miss the games against Chelsea and Leeds United

Steven Gerrard has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss Aston Villa's next two Premier League matches.

The Liverpool legend will not be on the sidelines for the games against Chelsea and Leeds United.

The club said in a statement: "Aston Villa can confirm head coach Steven Gerrard will be unable to attend our next two Premier League matches with Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be isolating after testing positive for Covid-19."

Villa have seen an upturn in form since appointing Gerrard as their manager in November.

They have won four of their six Premier League games in that period - and were unlucky to lose their two games to title challengers Liverpool and Manchester City.

Wins over Brighton, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Norwich have propelled Villa up to 10th in the table and well away from the relegation battle.

Villa are taking on Chelsea on Boxing Day and Leeds on the 28th. No further cases or isolations are yet to be reported by Villa ahead of those games, which are scheduled to go ahead as normal.

Their game against Burnley on Saturday 18 December was postponed at the last minute due to positive Covid cases.
