Manchester United have reportedly identified an alternative option to Newcastle United target Kieran Trippier ahead of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils are understood to be keen on adding a new right-back and have weighed up a move for Trippier in both of the previous two transfer windows.

With Newcastle also now said to be interested in a move for the Atletico Madrid defender, United have looked at other options as they look to add to their squad.

At present, Ralf Rangnick's option at right-back are Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, but he shares Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's opinion that an upgrade is required.

The Athletic report that while United remain interested in Trippier they are also now considering a move for RB Leipzig's Tyler Adams.

The 22-year-old American is capable of playing in both midfield and on the right side of the defence and joined the German side in 2019.

New United assistant manager Chris Armas is said to be a huge admirer of Adams, having worked with him at his former club New York Red Bulls.

Adams has made 20 appearances for Leipzig so far this season, with the majority coming in defensive midfield but he has also featured at right-back and on the right wing.

It is likely he would cost in excess of £20million and he still has three-and-a-half-years remaining on his current Leipzig deal.

United had previously been the front-runners to sign England international Trippier, having first looked into signing the 31-year-old in January 2021.

A 10-week ban from the FA ultimately ended United's pursuit at the start of the year but they renewed their interest in the summer.

Having failed to agree a fee with Atletico, United instead decided against signing a new right-back.

Their delaying in signing Trippier has allowed Newcastle to swoop in and the Magpies are understood to be keen on making the former Tottenham Hotspur man their new owners' first signing.
