Manchester United have been put on red alert after Bayern Munich chief Oliver Kahn played down their chances of signing Erling Haaland. The Norwegian superstar is being linked with a blockbuster move away from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Haaland is set to be the subject of an intense battle for his services at the end of this season.
The striker will be available for just around £66million due to a clause in his contract, which is expected to trigger a tug-of-war battle among the elite clubs around Europe.
United are one of many clubs interested in the 21-year-old along with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich.
Reports this week even claimed United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has held 'private talks' over a blockbuster move for Haaland.
However, Bayern have a history of snatching Dortmund's top players while United don't have the best of relationships with the player's agent Mino Raiola.

Furthermore, reports in Germany have also claimed that insiders are ‘adamant’ Haaland will sign for Bayern in the summer.
But Bayern director Kahn has poured cold water on a potential transfer.
When asked about the possibility of signing Haaland, Kahn told Süddeutsche Zeitung as per transfer report Fabrizio Romano: “We have Robert Lewandowski. He's still going to score 30-40 goals for a few more years."
That will come as a huge boost to United, who have been long-time admirers of Haaland.
With Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial set to leave the club in the summer, United's necessity for a striker has been intensified in recent weeks.
Martial, whose agent announced that he wants to seal a move away in January, is said to have reached an agreement with another club.
The Frenchman has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Juventus and Barcelona, but Tuttomercatoweb claim Sevilla have an agreement in principle to sign him.
Cavani, meanwhile, has intentions to sign for Barcelona once his United deal expires at the end of the season.
