The robbers placed the belt around the Argentine's neck before forcing him to hand over the loot, according to Correio da Manhã.

Otamendi joined Portuguese giants Benfica from City in September 2020.

And the incident is said to have taken place after the Eagles' 4-1 win at Famalicao on Sunday night.

The player is said to have been 'caught as he arrived back at his home'.

He was reportedly beaten before having the belt placed around his neck and led into the room where his 'panicked' wife and son were.

Otamendi made more than 200 appearances for the Etihad side and won the Premier League twice.

The 33-year-old also won the Copa America earlier this year with Argentina.

Otamendi is the latest high-profile footballer to be targeted by violent thugs.

In September, Chelsea star Reece James revealed shocking CCTV of 'cowardly' thieves breaking into his house and stealing a safe containing several medals.

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli was battered by knife-wielding robbers as the ace played pool in May.

Paris Saint-Germain - and former Manchester United winger - Angel Di Maria's house was robbed while his family were inside in March.

And most recently Arsenal star Gabriel had to fight off a baseball bat-wielding thug who tried to steal his car from his garage.

A pair of thieves followed the £27m centre-back and his friend home before demanding the footballer's keys, phone and watch as he got out of his Mercedes.

Shocking CCTV footage showed the hooded robber, Abderaham Muse, lunge at the Brazilian with the silver bat.

But the Arsenal star jabbed him in the face before wrestling and grabbing his hat until the robber managed to escape and ran away with his accomplice.

They sprinted past a third member of the gang, who had been making sure the electronic gates outside the home remained open.
