Tottenham have joined the queue of clubs interested in unsettled Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen

The Danish international, 25, is yet to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge and, if that stalemate continues, will be a free agent at the end of the campaign.

That has put a host of clubs, both here and abroad, on standby - and Spurs are the latest to enter the equation.

New boss Antonio Conte has already identified that strengthening the defensive spine of his team XIs an absolute priority.

Whether the North Londoners have a realistic shout of securing Christensen remains to be seen.

Both Manchester United and City are monitoring developments and, particularity, what unfolds January.

That’s when the likes of AC Milan and Barcelona can steal a march on their English rivals - and open formal negotiations with the player over a summer move.

Not that Chelsea have given up on persuading Christensen, who joined their academy in 2012 at the age of 14, to stay put. Far from it.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel continues to see him as a crucial part of his plans going forward - and has made that clear to the club hierarchy.

The need to retain Christensen appears more acute than ever right now for the Champions League holders.

They could easily lose three more central defenders in July - with Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta also out of contract.
