Lionel Messi won his seventh Ballon d'Or last week, extending his record with the most wins, and his son Thiago was confused to see the latest trophy added to his dad's collection.

Messi picked up his latest trophy confirming he's the best player in the world in France last Monday, although unlike the previous six times it was highly contentious.

The PSG forward pipped Robert Lewandowski to the win and many people believed the Bayern Munich striker, who'd been stopped from winning it the previous year by Covid, should have won.

Even the winner admitted Lewandowski was robbed of the title in 2020, and his own son was pretty surprised to find his dad now had a seventh trophy.

In a video capturing Thiago Messi's first glimpse of the new golden ball, the nine year old asks why his dad now has a seventh, a conversation that might have been repeated if Lewandowski was at the table instead of the child.

"Why do you have seven Ballon d'Ors dad? Don't you have six?" the youngster asks his dad, perhaps not realising the ceremony has taken place.

"I have seven now," Messi answers.

"Did you win it today? In the house there's only six balls. When did you win it?" the youngster inquires;

"Today," his dad says.

"Today?! Why?!" Messi junior once again asks, this time really mirroring the feelings of a Polish striker who broke a 49-year-old Bundesliga scoring record.

"I don't know!" Messi senior responds, this time mirroring the feelings of many people, including Alphonso Davies.

Whilst many people were outraged by Lewandowski being overlooked, Messi did still score 30 goals last year and won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona.

More importantly, the 34-year-old finally broke his international trophy duck with Argentina, lifting the Copa America with his national side.

He was the tournament's top goal scorer and player of the tournament as he finally lifted silverware with his country after several near misses.

Messi did admit during his speech that Lewandowski should have won the award in 2020 but the former Borussia Dortmund striker wasn't too convinced by those words.

"I'm not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award," Lewandowski said.

"I would like it [Messi's 2020 Ballon d'Or statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just an empty words."
