Luis Suarez burst into tears after being substituted early on in Atletico Madrid's crucial Champions League tie against Porto.

The former Liverpool man couldn't contain his emotions after being forced off with an injury just 13 minutes into the match.

Distraught at not being able to help his team, Suarez put his head in his hands as he returned to the substitute's bench.

Matheus Cunha came off the bench to replace the veteran Uruguayan and partner Antoine Griezmann up front.

Suarez's reaction prompted plenty of comments online, ranging from genuine sympathy to those mocking his plight.

One person tweeted: "Suarez crying I needed this content especially today."

Someone else said: "Luis Suárez was crying after being substituted due to injury. Just 1 season and he has become so much attached to the club."

A third person added: "Suarez off and he's crying? Bloody hell, hope the injury's nothing serious."

Another user commented: "Suarez crying on the bench is one of my favorite moments of 2021."

While a fifth profile chimed in with: "Suarez is crying on the bench :( This match was made for him, big game player."

It is not the first time Suarez has displayed his emotions on the football pitch.

He famously broke down in tears after Crystal Palace fought back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 against Liverpool in 2014 and terminally damage the Reds' title hopes.

The 34-year-old also broke down in tears on the pitch after helping Atletico win the La Liga title last season.

This time, though, his waterworks were caused by a feeling of helplessness at not being able to aid his team.

Diego Simeone's side were already hampered by injuries before their crucial trip to Porto.

Geoffrey Kondogbia was handed a start in defence with first choice pair Jose Maria Gimenez and Stefan Savic both missing.

Simeone said: "(Porto) are an extraordinary team that has been doing very well. They have a structured system, a lot of players to recover the ball, an intense playing style with fast players.

"They are a very good team that plays well. They are favoured because they have more points than Milan and us.”
