Man United have removed a huge mural dedicated to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that was hanging outside Old Trafford, just a few days after the Norwegian was sacked as manager

Manchester United are already embracing life after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a giant mural of the Norwegian hanging outside Old Trafford was torn down.

On Wednesday, three workmen were spotted removing the image from the Sir Matt Busby stand, just three days after the 48-year-old was sacked.

Solskjaer's three-year stint in charge of Man United came to an end following a dismal run of five losses in seven league matches.

Heavy defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City stung badly, but losing 4-1 to Watford on Saturday - which left United 12 points behind league-leaders Chelsea - proved to be the final straw.

The club's board called an emergency meeting after the game and Ole was relieved of his duties the next morning at United's training ground.

First-team coach Michael Carrick has been appointed caretaker manager until an interim is found.

The club are looking to hire Mauricio Pochettino as Solskjaer's permanent replacement, but are unlikely to get him before the summer as Paris Saint Germain don't want to lose their manager mid-season.

As such, Man United are looking to hire a temporary head coach until Pochettino becomes available, and are considering moves for Ernesto Valverde, Ralf Rangnick and Lucien Favre among others.

Pochettino is the club's number one target, but should they fail to land him their attentions will turn to Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

Caretaker boss Carrick won his first game in charge on Tuesday night as the Red Devils beat Villarreal 2-0 in the Champions League.

Second-half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho secured all three points as United sealed progression to the knockout stages of the competition.

After the game, Carrick dedicated the victory to Solskjaer.

"I’ve said to the guys, it’s not been an easy couple of days for everyone at the club," the 40-year-old said.

"I can enjoy it so much but still, that result feels like it’s for Ole, I can’t get away from that."
