Man City icon Sergio Aguero 'forced into retirement' due to heart problems

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will announce an early retirement from football in a press conference next week owing to ill health, according to a recent report

Sergio Aguero is set to announce his retirement at just 33 years old owing to heart problems, according to reports.

Manchester City’s record goalscorer left for Barcelona at the end of last season, signing up at the Nou Camp on a two-year deal.

But the Argentine striker has just featured four times for the Catalans since making the move, while it was confirmed recently that he would be sidelined for the foreseeable future following the advice of medical professionals.

Following the speculation, Aguero took to social media where he said: "Given the rumours, I tell them that I am following the indications of the club's doctors, doing tests and treatment and seeing my progress within 90 days. Always positive."

Now Spanish reporter Gerard Romero said that Aguero will announce his retirement from the game very soon. Speaking on Twitch, the reporter said [translated to English]: “Kun Aguero will retire. Heart problems force him to leave football. Next week a press conference is scheduled to announce his withdrawal.”

Aguero was rushed to hospital after suffering chest pain during his side’s game with Alaves at the end of October.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Aguero was then diagnosed with a ‘cardiac arrhythmia’ or an irregular heartbeat.

Subsequent checks at the hospital led to the decision for the striker to now retire from the game, according to the reporter.

It’s thought that Barcelona are aware of the situation and a press conference will be sorted for next week where Aguero will touch on his future.

His Argentina team-mates paid tribute to the striker ahead of their recent World Cup qualifier against Brazil with a banner saying, “we are all with you Kun”.

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who famously broke into tears on TV when speaking about Aguero’s departure from his club, said that Aguero should put his health first.

"We wish him well from all the people here at Manchester City, we wish him a safe recovery," Guardiola said.

"The time doesn’t matter. Health and life are much more important than anything else.

“We wish him as speedy and safe recovery as possible and he comes back, if possible, to play again, otherwise to enjoy his life and what he has done, and to be careful and be safe for the rest of his life.”
