With Barcelona's financial position still perilous, the club have continued to look at cost-effective ways they can improve their team, and Alves' return was an opportunity that worked for everyone.

As soon as Xavi Hernandez gave the move the green light upon his own return to the Camp Nou as coach, it became a matter of priority for Joan Laporta to sign Alves, a player who was actually one of the first to arrive in the Pep Guardiola era too.

The deal to sign Xavi was also one impacted by LaLiga Santander rules, with the coach and his technical staff added a grand total of 3.9 million euros to the club's wage bill.

This was the maximum that the league regulations would allow Los Cules to add, although it left almost no margin for Alves.

Mateu Alemany confirmed that Barcelona had no further wages to offer potential new signings, but the expense laid out on Alves has proven to be minimal.

Lower than normal salary

According to La Vanguardia, Alves will earn 155,000 euros per year with Barcelona, which is a salary way below his actual worth, despite being 38 years old.

Los Cules were able to take advantage of Alves' fondness for the club during negotiations, encouraging him to take such a low offer, because of his intense desire to see Barcelona return to past glories.

Alves wanted this more than anything, he wanted to re-sign for the Blaugrana at all costs and it was the attitude which facilitated the move once Xavi okayed it.

He can't actually play for the club until January 1, but Alves will now train and familiarise himself with the senior team at Barcelona ahead of his playing return.
