The Premier League's incomprehensible wealth is set to continue after the league released a statement on Thursday detailing a new deal with US-based company NBC. Having continued to buy the rights to show English top-flight football for the ninth season in a row, the company have agreed a deal that is worth £2billion ($2.7b) - a record for overseas coverage.

NBC started showing Premier League football in the 2013-14 season on what was an initial £185m three-year deal.

It was a huge success on NBC's behalf, whose views the following season were up a reported 118 per cent on the season ESPN broadcasted before they took over.

A six-year extension followed suit, with the popular broadcaster signing another deal in 2015 to last until the end of the current season worth a reported £640m.

And news broke today of a deal that has demolished the record by over three times the previous record, giving Premier League chiefs joy over the division's success.

Richard Masters was delighted with the deal

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters was delighted with the news, and alluded to the deal being able to help clubs financially after the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are delighted to announce our new US broadcast deal with NBC Sports, who have been brilliant partners for the Premier League over the last nine seasons," he said.

“NBC Sports has significantly strengthened the popularity of the League in the United States in that time through its fantastic coverage and promotion.

“NBC Sports' Premier League Mornings programming is now a real institution among supporters in America.

"Fans are getting up early to come together and cheer on their favourite club, week in, week out.

“It's an exciting time for football in the US and we look forward to continuing to work with NBC Sports to bring our competition to even more fans over the next six years.

“Our international and domestic broadcast revenues over the next cycle will give stability and certainty to the game as a whole, which is particularly important as football recovers from COVID-19 losses.”

The deal still doesn't come close to Sky and BT's arrangement of football coverage for UK-based viewers.

The duo agreed to pay a combined £4.5b from 2019/20 to the end of the current season.

A further twenty games were sold to Amazon Prime for an undisclosed sum said to be worth around £600,000.

And with the current deal expected to expire at the end of the current season, there may be even more money pumped into the coffers of English football by the start of next season.
