Brazilian icon Neymar has shared his shock and disbelief following reports Brazilian pop star Marilia Dias Mendonca has tragically died in a light aircraft crash.

The plane is said to have come down during mid-afternoon local time near the city of Piedade de Caratinga near a mountain region in the Southeast of Brazil.

The 26-year-old singer was one of five reported dead in the crash, with Mendonça’s uncle and advisor Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho releasing a statement.

It reads: "With immense regret, we confirm the death of singer Marília Mendonca, her producer Henrique Ribeiro, her uncle and advisor Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, the pilot and co-pilot of the plane, whose names we will preserve at this time."

Dias Filho added: "The plane took off from Goiania with destination to Caratinga/MG, where Marilia would have a performance tonight. At the moment, this is the information we have."
