Mauricio Pochettino replaced Lionel Messi at half time in Paris Saint-Germain's game at home to Lille, something that was even more surprising given the visitors had taken the lead in the first half through Jonathan David.
With Kylian Mbappe being sidelined as he is undergoing treatment for his ear, nose and throat (ENT) infection, Messi started upfront alongside Angel Di Maria and Neymar, but PSG looked toothless in attack before the break.
According to L'Equipe, Pochettino decided to replace his compatriot with Mauro Icardi as a precaution, with the Argentina captain being suffering from a muscle problem in the last few days.
Messi tried to combine with his teammates in the final third and had the chance to score with a freekick just outside Lille's box before the interval, but he sent the ball just wide.
